Because the world needs to know this, clearly:

Me: My name is Rufus, and that’s the trufus.

KG: ___’s grandad was named Rufus. I’ve always thought that was a very unfortunate name. Like Pubert. Except Pubert is much worse than Rufus. 

Me: Pubert isn’t a name.

KG: It is according to The Addams Family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 

Me: Because the Addams Family is true to life and not fiction at all: Pubert is not a name.

KG: Um, it’s TOTALLY true to life. Don’t you have a hair cousin with a high-pitched voice? 

Me: Your face is a hair cousin with a high-pitched voice.

KG: THAT IS SO AN INSULT I WOULD USE!  I might’ve substituted “Face” with “butt,” though.

Me: “Your butt is a hair cousin with a high-pitched voice” doesn’t make any sense.

I just spent the weekend attending the funeral for a family member. He killed himself December 1, and our family will never be the same.

I’m not usually serious about things, but I want to ask anyone who reads my words or looks at my pictures to do me a favor. If you know someone who is depressed, please do everything you can to help him or her. My family and I know that there was very little we could do to help—he was so far gone from us by this time, both physically and emotionally—but all of us wonder what one thing we could have done to help him. Even though his pain has ended—for which we’re all glad—his actions have left a wound of pain, guilt, and overwhelming sadness that will take years to heal, if it ever does.

Please, if you know someone struggling with depression, do everything you can to help them. Let them know that there are people who care and who will grieve deeply and mourn for years if they choose this path. One kind word, one hug, one “How are you?” could make a world of difference, in more than one life. And if you’ve reached this point in your life where you feel that you can’t go on, please, please talk to someone. Call a friend or a family member or the Hopeline (1-800-Suicide)—just talk.

You are loved, and you matter, and don’t you dare forget that.
